I speak from a track record of helping people get selected for jobs first time and when up against people who are ‘more experienced’ and ‘more qualified’.
Improving interview performance is about several factors that I cover in my talks and workshops:
- Self-awareness. Most people have done and achieved more than they realise. I help them to identify what they offer.
- Self-evaluation. How impressive are your achievements? Most people underplay the significance of their contribution. I help people to put their achievements into perspective so that they can talk about them effectively. I’ve likely consulted and interviewed people from similar backgrounds, so I’ll be able to contextualise.
- Understanding what the employer is looking for. I demonstrate how to analyse a Person Specification.
- Identifying what interviewers are looking for in a particular question and how to make answers compelling.
- Understanding the most appropriate structure, content, and length for each answer.
- How to think about the purpose of an interview to have the right mindset.
Interview skills: Job Interview Masterclass
This is a complete and comprehensive workshop session on how to succeed in interviews. In my job interview masterclass I share:
- How to identify and understand your value proposition.
- How to understand what an employer wants – every time.
- Matching your value proposition to employer needs.
- How to convey your achievements – whether they are quantifiable or not.
- Analysing questions that are asked – identifying question types and suitable answer content, structure, and length.
- How to start and finish your answers.
- How to be compelling.
- What’s the purpose of an interview from your point of view? Articulating this will change how you approach it.
Interview techniques training
I offer flexible training in interview skills combining group work and one-to-one support.
People have various blockers when it comes to interviews. It might be confidence, self-doubt, or uncertainty. It might be negative experiences in previous employment and you worry about how to talk positively about it. It might be uncertainty about how to speak about yourself and how to be authentic and compelling.
All of these things can be addressed in a bespoke session covering the themes from the Job Interview Masterclass tailored to the specific challenges faced by a group of people.
This is often delivered as part of an outplacement service or for schools and colleges.
Interview skills lectures
I will illuminate the interview process, bust myths, and help to transform how the audience approaches interviews.
I speak from experience as a recruiter and business manager plus wider business consultancy work and having coached people to succeed in interviews over the past 12 years.
The talk will be illustrated with up-to-date examples from recent and past experience. It will also allow audience questions and answers that support practical learning about a scenario that they may not have experienced.
Develop skills for different interview questions
There will often be new approaches to interviewing and selecting job candidates. In recent times, this has included online interviews, recorded answers to pre-recorded questions, and changing fashion in what is asked. You are less likely to be asked how many lightbulbs there are in New York and more likely to be asked about a time you influenced a stakeholder (job dependent).
Ultimately, though, the purpose of an interview remains the same: The employer is trying to choose between a set of candidates who have all been shortlisted.
My training and workshops will balance the development of fundamental understanding with specific current techniques for current interview practices.
Online interview skills
Online interviews are here to stay. Whilst some interviews will always be in person, many will be online – either at the initial stage or entirely – as with remote jobs.
Skills for online interviews overlap with general interview skills but there are also some specific challenges and specific considerations for online interviews.
This can be covered in bespoke interview training or as a specific subject.
