Based in the UK, I have written CVs for people across 6 continents and in almost every job you can imagine. I have succeeded in all of these places and noticed that the fundamental requirements are the same everywhere.

People tend to fixate on minor differences like chronological vs reverse chronological order and whether or not to include a photo. The truth is that these are minor things. To the extent that they do differ by location, they are still not the most important things. The answer to both questions is ‘it depends.’

Are CV requirements different by location?

The short answer is ‘no’. At least, the fundamentals do not change by location.

Employers are looking for what they believe to be the best person for the job. You have to understand their criteria and give that to them, with examples, in a compelling way.

The criteria are knowable by looking at the job advert and accompanying information, particularly the Person Specification.
