Job application skills programme

Job application skills programme for schools and community groups

This is a structured programme of activities that can be delivered over several weeks, a term, or a whole year; depending on what best fits your timetable.

It provides skills development and practical application with professional feedback and support for each participant.

All participants finish this with both a set of practical tools (CV, job application skills, interview techniques) and the ability to apply these with optimal effect.

Building your careers programme

I understand the wide-ranging nature of school careers programmes. There are multiple considerations, competing demands, Gatsby benchmarks, and other standards, including CDI and Ofsted. My CV and job application skills programmes are designed to complement learning from elsewhere whilst providing specialist CV and job application learning.

My role is to provide leading expertise in the job application aspect.

Subjects include:

  • Understanding the value of the things you have done at school and elsewhere
  • Communicating your skills
  • CV planning and writing
  • Application form writing
  • Application etiquette (including cover letters, communicating with recruiters and employers during the process, and social media)
  • Responding to job adverts
  • Interview skills
  • Mock interviews
  • Research and development for your career

How to improve destinations

Knowing what you want to do is one thing. Knowing the general requirements is better. But, knowing how to actually get chosen by employers in that field is the final part of the picture.

If students know how to do this at an individual level, with advice based on their circumstances and achievements, that’s what helps them to succeed in making their next step.

Developing career life skills

The Job Application Skills Programme will develop important life skills as well as improve immediate destinations. These skills include self-awareness, effective self-evaluation, effective communication in job application scenarios, and interview techniques.

All pupils finish with

  • A CV that they have written and has been audited by a recruitment and business management professional.
  • Experience of a realistic interview for the kind of role they want.
  • Advice on how to conduct themselves throughout the job seeking and early job period.

How much is that worth to any student? What if all of your final-year students were trained in this?
