CV update
If I have written your CV already, then I offer an update service either for a different job or, (often a year or two later) to add on your most recent job and then edit the whole thing to reflect your current circumstances and career stage.
CV rewriting for a different job
Does a CV need to be different for a different job? Absolutely. If the selection criteria are different then your CV needs to be different also. So, even if you are applying for two jobs at the same time, the optimal CV for each of the jobs might be very different. If the differences are minimal e.g. the same job title for a different company and much of the criteria is similar, then you will often be able to do this yourself. If however, you are applying for two very different jobs, then the CV will have to be very different.
I will do a full rewrite of the summary, the key skills and achievements, and adapt the focus and emphasis of the work section to make the CV suitable. It may be that qualifications need to be added, taken out, or described differently. For example, you may want to include a list of modules from a course. Then, I complete a full edit of the CV with reference to the specific Person Specification for your target job.
CV update with new experience
In this case, I will need to talk to you about your most recent job(s) and write those sections similarly to the work I did on your original CV.
Then, I will rewrite the summary and skills and achievements sections to match. Often, new experiences produce achievements that outshine those of a year or two ago. Or, the new ones may be more applicable to your target role.
The recent content doesn’t automatically supersede the previous content though – it’s all about matching the Person Specification.
After these changes., I will edit your entire CV to match your new target role. Remember, it will still have to be two pages typically – so there is an amount of work to do to edit your detailed CV down to this length again.
How does a CV change as I progress in my career?
This is necessary because a year or two in a new job can completely change the level of your offering. New levels of experience and responsibility can mean that the whole CV needs to be written differently.
Then there is the editing. It should still be on two pages typically. And, there will be details that were important two jobs ago that are no longer important. Either because your target job has changed or because you have even better examples to give now.
Don’t underestimate how much time is involved in adding a new job and either matching the tone of your existing CV or levelling everything up. Then, editing it back down to two pages without missing anything important.
