Many times, when you apply for a job using a CV, you will need a cover letter. It might be when you are sending your CV by email in response to an advert or speculatively. Or, it might be when uploading your CV online and there is room for more than one attachment.
A cover letter is relatively quick and easy to write after I have written your CV.
That’s because it’s a summary of the CV. Writing it whilst all of that valuable CV information is fresh in my mind is relatively straightforward.
Because I don’t recommend including anything in a cover letter that isn’t on your CV, the letter should not be overthought.

FAQ: Can you write me a cover letter only?
I can, of course, write you a cover letter on its own. But, this is unlikely to be the best value for you, since I will need to carry out a consultation with you to fully understand your career that I am summarising. And, a cover letter should match your CV in the level of quality, detail, and tone. So, you are almost always better off getting the CV and cover letter package.
I could just summarise your existing CV, but, there will be sections where I need to say ‘Add a line about this’ or ‘How can you quantify that?’ With the additional detail that comes from the consultation, I will be able to write it more comprehensively, including the extra parts.
I’ve never once done a CV consultation that didn’t uncover a wealth of valuable additional information.
FAQ: Are there different types of cover letters?
There are two types of cover letters – both of which I can provide you if you would like them:
- Advert response cover letter – tailored to a single specific vacancy.
- Speculative cover letter – for when you are not targeting a specific vacancy but a potential employer in which you have a particular interest. It tells them what you can offer and why they should interview you.
