Job application form help
Job application forms can be just as challenging as CVs. Even more so, because some questions can seem mysterious. And, there are just as many aspects of it that can be improved with professional advice.
Like CVs, there are unfortunately many myths and misconceptions about application form writing. Like the belief that they are ‘easier’ or ‘fairer’ than CVs. Or that they are just factual statements. Actually, the challenge with job application forms is that no one is trained to write them well. And, writing one that has the power to get you chosen consistently requires specialist knowledge.

Do I need a job application form or a CV?
That depends entirely on the job you want.
Search for suitable jobs and check what they most often ask for.
In the UK, job application forms are most commonly used in the public sector. Jobs in government departments, councils, schools, emergency services, and healthcare. Also, some large companies use application forms.
In some roles, like teaching and healthcare, requirements can vary from one employer to another. Some ask for application forms and some ask for CVs.
What is the most important part of a job application form?
Usually, there is one question at the end that is worded something like:
Please explain how you meet the Person Specification, giving examples from your experience and qualifications.
If this kind of question appears on an application form, then you should know that it is the most crucial part of the process.
The fact that you have to get your whole offering across in one go makes it a challenge. You have to do this in a structured way and give examples along the way. It’s a challenging but rewarding task.
You also have to convey how you meet many criteria, which can range from three to more than thirty. Fifty is the most that I have seen.
What other questions might be on an application form?
There are alternatives to the one question that says ‘Tell us everything.’ Like a series of ‘competency’ based questions. The same thing applies to these. The question might make it clear which specific criteria from the Person Specification it is asking about or it may require judgement. Across the series of questions, you need to meet the full set of criteria. After this, the advice is the same as the ‘single big question.’
There will of course be some factual questions like where you have worked and your qualifications. But, whichever questions give you a significant amount of ‘free text’ space, these are the ones that will be most useful in getting you selected.
Application form writing service begins with a detailed consultation
My approach here is to carry out the initial consultation very much like the CV consultation – developing a full understanding of your career history and your value.
I can then use elements of this as required on the application form.
